Dedicated to serving the orthopedic needs of Columbus, North Vernon, Seymour, Greensburg, and the surrounding areas since 1976, Southern Indiana Orthopedics offers exceptional knee care from our specialty-trained knee doctors so you can get stronger.

Pain in your knee can be frustrating and even debilitating. Ongoing pain in the knee joint can make it challenging to even stand for long periods. Such discomfort in the knee can be a red flag for a serious underlying knee condition, such as knee arthritis, that will only worsen if you don't have it treated. Additionally, injury and other knee damage can change your gait and alignment and may lead to injuring your hip or back or to other musculoskeletal pain.

The good news is that knee conditions can always be effectively treated—from simple home remedies to advanced surgical options, like knee replacement. The first step is meeting with an orthopedic doctor. Orthopedists, including knee specialists and joint replacement or sports medicine surgeons, specialize in bone, joint, tendon, ligament, and muscle issues and will be able to properly diagnose you. Knee specialists will recommend your best treatment options and are equipped to perform surgery, if necessary, for any knee injury.

Pain in the knee can be serious. Some discomfort following an intense workout or a minor athletic injury is normal, but you should see a sports medicine or knee provider if:

  • Your knee pain lasts for longer than two or three days.
  • You try to apply home remedies but the knee pain and swelling only intensify.
  • Your knee pain prevents you from completing everyday tasks.
  • Your knee pain keeps you from a good night's sleep.
  • You were in a traumatic accident and your knee was damaged.

When meeting with your surgeon or doctor, the first step is diagnosis. Surgeons will employ different tools to diagnose you, including physical examinations, X-rays, and even arthroscopy.

Some of the most common conditions in and around the knee include:

  • Arthritis or osteoarthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Damaged cartilage
  • Dislocated kneecap
  • Fractures
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease
  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner's knee)
  • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries
  • Shin splints
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Sprains
  • Swollen tendon
  • Torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or other ACL conditions
  • Torn meniscus

We also offer treatment for urgent knee and sports-related injuries at our urgent care clinic in Columbus, where walk-ins are welcome and no appointment is necessary.

Orthopedic Urgent Care

The Full Range of Advanced Knee Care in Columbus, North Vernon, Seymour & Greensburg

Our specialty-trained and fellowship-trained knee doctors will help you identify the cause of your pain, using MRI and X-ray imaging and other tools, and will review your treatment options. These options can span from nonsurgical solutions, like orthobiologics and ultrasound-guided injections as well as physical therapy and knee bracing, to arthroscopic repairs and total knee replacement surgery.

For more serious conditions, such as osteoarthritis, our surgeons offer state-of-the-art special surgical techniques and minimally invasive procedures to keep you moving. There are various types of knee surgery, and the most common one is knee replacement or knee arthroplasty.

In addition to knee fracture care and reconstructive knee surgery for various injuries, we perform both partial knee replacement and total knee replacement surgical procedures. These work just like other joint replacement surgeries, such as hip or shoulder. As such, the damaged parts of the knee are removed, and we place in a synthetic implant. The goal of this surgical technique is to allow you to live without pain or impaired mobility.

Sometimes, a total knee replacement needs to be revised through additional knee surgery. Patients who get their knees replaced early in life have implants prematurely wear out and may need to have new ones installed. This is called knee revision surgery, which several of our surgeons specialize in.

Those who receive orthopedic surgery may have a few months of recovery before total mobility is restored. Recovery can often be made easier with less invasive surgical techniques along with rest and minimal medication. Your knee doctor will be available to answer any additional questions.
